It is hard not to agree with all Howard says. It seems he is missing a few important steps in the process though. No one I have ever read has said you can short cut the process of self, or self to community.

All civilizations realize the importance of passing through one self to the next. The Jesus myth is just that. Recall Nietzsche's "Three Metamorphoses" on how the spirit becomes a camel; and the camel, a lion; and the lion, finally, a child. If we could get to the end without passing through the middle - we would stay in the ecstatic state of a child. But no. We must carry society's burden until we can bear it no more. Then wew can yell fuck you, slay the beast, and find the God we love.</description>
