How I removed a CD stuck in my MacBook Pro

[UPDATE} It appears the best method is the credit card with double-sided tape. read about that approach in the comments. My problem was that the CD (likely the case for DVD disks as well) was physically stuck because of a clear plastic label placed over the playlist side of the CD. I didn't notice it when I inserted it, which increased the thickness of the CD beyond the tolerance of some aspect of the MacBook's eject mechanism. I fiddled around with it for quite a while, trying all the various solutions on the Internets, but none worked.
The slot has a felt dust remover that makes it hard to see what's happening inside. Finally I noticed a metal spring that acts as a kind of door in the middle of the slot. The spring moves up and down when you select eject, which allows the disk to pass.
I suppressed the spring from the top toward the bottom using the very tip of a fine-bladed knife and hit the eject button. A very thin-tipped flat screwdriver would probably work as well, but the business card trick did not hold it down. The drive tried to eject the disk repeatedly and finally I saw the tip of the disk emerge.
Over the last year, many other people have shared additional approaches on this thread, so read further if my method doesn't work for you.
If this happens to you, be patient, keep trying, and you'll get it out without wrecking the drive or spending a lot of money to have someone else remove it.

Thank a lot… 2 DVDs just stuck in my macbook pro.. the credit card work well…
@Archie
i wouldent do that
It worked! Thank you so much! It took me a little while to get the feel of where to push, but eventually the disc popped out. What a relief!
I thought my cd (Wiggles Sing-a-Long) was physically stuck too and was too scared to try pull it out so I thought it would pull the spindle out and void my warrant but ALAS, it pulled out nicely with the double sided tape THANK YOU, you’re a saviour! You saved me a very important week without my laptop!!! (3-5 business days to replace cd drive from apple)
Yeah just tried this technique after getting a mini cd stuck in my new macbook pro. It worked in like 2 minutes. Respect.
@Eloise
THANKS MAN your method worked
Held down the spring repeatedly - no joy. Thought it was going to result in a trip to the Mac doctor or I would have permanent CD in drive. Just tried the double-sided tape way. Bit dodge at first, but then…thanks.
Thanks a million people! Worked in 5 seconds!!! You’re total gems!!
You are a genius with that double sided tape. I put in a mini cd and it got stuck. I did the credit card and the double sided tape and it worked like magic in a second! Thank you for the tip!!
OMG. I thought I was the only one stupid enough to put a mini-cd in my macbook pro. Thank you for whoever came up with the double sided tape trick!!!!!
Yep credit card and tape worked first try, tried all the rest and nothing, drive just did not respond to nothing, no spinning, no eject, no reboot click this click that, only terminal command line that made the drive try and eject but that did bugger all.
Went to my apple shop earlier before i tried the card and tape method, they said £80ish for drive and another £70 for them to fit it. Rip off as usual.
Mr B
This rocks. Thanks so much. It was the packing tape was the gem. My heart is still pounding tho.
Holding the lever down with a credit card worked for me, tried with the knife aswell but was too afraid so i couldnt keep it down, credit card is a bit safer
thx!
It’s absolutely ridiculous that this thread is even necessary.
We cut Apple wayyyyy too much slack for idiotic stuff like this.
The double sided tape worked!!!
Oh thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you …
Didn’t think the card and tape would come out. I shat myself for a while there - but when I did get it out it had the mini CD attached. Brilliant!
you are the best of all.
Wow! I can’t thank you enough. I bought my wife a photo-displaying Xmas ornament that came with a mini-CD. I wondered about that, but, foolishly, I inserted it into my Macbook’s CD slot and there it remained — until I tried your credit card and double-sided tape trick. I had some of the thick (about 1/16 inch) padded double sided tape that I put onto a thinnish Disney-world photo pass card that I inserted into the slot and It worked the first time. Cheers and Happy Holidays! — Howard
Was skeptical of following a online guide that suggested I shove tap into my cd slot, but with just a few trys i was able to get it. Thanks.
I was very silly and did that too. I know you’ve got it out now but for anyone else, use sticky note and it will come out
Genius…. Pure and simple genius….
Tape up the CD drive ftw.
Thanks to all of you! I think I’ve tried every single tip i found on here… not sure what did it in the end, the card didn’t work, the tape didn’t work, ejecting while rebooting didn’t work… nothing worked… just when i gave up and thought i’f give the eject while starting up one more try, it came out!!!!
guess it will be a while until i use that super slot again!
Great tip! Thanks for posting it!
Hey guys, before you try anything rash (which I think sticking a knife in your drive can be)
Do yourself a favor and try this.
Go to your applications and choose disk utility, there you should be able to see some different eject options. Try that first, then more drastic measures.
You will probably save yourself some heart ache.
AHHHH thank you! im just an idiot that put 2 disks in my computer without realizing it, the card with tape worked SO easily! first try, thank you so much, i don’t have to pay a lot of money so that people at the apple store can take it out! this was the most helpful advice! thank you!
Thank you. I had already tried using the eject button several times, but I had forgotten about going to utilities section….it worked! Thank you!!!!
@Aaron
WHOHOO!! thank you so much for this. I did the same thing (cd w/stupid label which I wasn’t paying attention to). Whew! You saved me some heartache & $ by not having to take it in!! I used a fine tipped knife to ease it out & it worked. YAY!! Thanks!!
whoop whoop!!! thank you so much for the credit card and tape idea - worked a treat! My niece (I reckon!) pushed a taxi company business card into my cd drive - i didn’t realise this, when the cd wouldn’t go in, so must have pushed it further in. Most of it came out with the cd, but a large corner got stuck inside.
I actually taped two cards together (overlapping lengthways) to get to it. Thanks so much!
Thank You it really helped alot
brilliant - had 2 DVD’s stuck, don’t ask …but the double tape on a credit card worked first time
Thanks so much i just got a disk stuck in my friends brand new mac. This worked so well 1st time no problems. If you don’t have double sided tape a sticker folded over works just as well =]
Thanks again =]
I followed the advice of one of the commenters and used a Post-It note instead of double-sided tape. Worked beautifully after just a few tries. One thing I am unsure of from this string: did most people hear the drive >trying to eject the disc, and it simply wouldn’t come? Or was the drive silent, as though it had received no command?
In my case the eject command, no matter what method was used, caused the disc icon to vanish from the various places it existed (in iTunes, on the desktop, in Finder, in Disc Utility) — but the drive made no sound, as though it never even tried to eject.
Any rate, thanks for the suggestions, and encouragement. I am breathing easier.
i love ya i swear
@Kirsty
Sticky note worked! i folded it in half with the sticky sides out and after a few tires its out!
I tried credit card with tape. Didn’t have double-sided, but I wrapped tape around the whole card, sticky side out. I have an iMac running Tiger (about 3-4 years old) and nothing is working. I’ve tried holding the card horizontally, vertically, at the top of slot, at the bottom of slot, pressing towards back of screen and front of screen. No luck.
Tried disc utility, holding down mouse at startup. The disc shows up, says that it’s “ejectable,” but also says that it’s locked. It is a blank cd (dvd?) with no label on it.
NOTHING’S working!! Can someone please help???
@V.J.
Actually, 2 minutes after I wrote this, the card with the tape trick finally worked. But now I am afraid to insert another disc into the drive, (as I don’t know why this one got stuck in the first place,) because I’m afraid of a repeat episode. This computer wasn’t cheap ($2,400+) and certainly not abused in any way. Seeing that people are having this problem all over the internet, I’m wondering if this isn’t some kind of Apple defect.
thanx a lot
I’m try but thiis isnt workinggg!!! Freaking out!!!
alsooo its too fart to fit in :S
oops fat*
YOU SAVED MY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you magical credit card wizard <3

Thank you!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! This worked. The double stick tape was my savior. Thank you so very much! I had 2 DVD’s jammed in there and the double stick tape method worked. Thanks again
