How I removed a CD stuck in my MacBook Pro

[UPDATE} It appears the best method is the credit card with double-sided tape. read about that approach in the comments. My problem was that the CD (likely the case for DVD disks as well) was physically stuck because of a clear plastic label placed over the playlist side of the CD. I didn't notice it when I inserted it, which increased the thickness of the CD beyond the tolerance of some aspect of the MacBook's eject mechanism. I fiddled around with it for quite a while, trying all the various solutions on the Internets, but none worked.
The slot has a felt dust remover that makes it hard to see what's happening inside. Finally I noticed a metal spring that acts as a kind of door in the middle of the slot. The spring moves up and down when you select eject, which allows the disk to pass.
I suppressed the spring from the top toward the bottom using the very tip of a fine-bladed knife and hit the eject button. A very thin-tipped flat screwdriver would probably work as well, but the business card trick did not hold it down. The drive tried to eject the disk repeatedly and finally I saw the tip of the disk emerge.
Over the last year, many other people have shared additional approaches on this thread, so read further if my method doesn't work for you.
If this happens to you, be patient, keep trying, and you'll get it out without wrecking the drive or spending a lot of money to have someone else remove it.
thank you anonymous said !!!
just tried the restart computer holding down option key etc. idea,
it spit the disk right out !
after a day of fumbling around with tweezers, etc…
thank you !
cheers, tambien !!!
much thanks to mac sept. 22nd!!! I was SOO worried whe n I stupidly left a 2.5 inch cd inside. but that postnote on card worked like a charm!
Thank YOU so very MUCH RayRe - I double-sided my college ID and worked like a CHARM - I struggled with it forever but this one worked - yayyyy
OMG
have just put sellotape wrapped business card + flat screwdriver in
panic
business card shed its sellotape
but when i tried and managed to pull that out it brought the cd with it!!!!
pure genuis
thanks to all above
i honestly just fiddled with a very thin bladed knife and pushed down on random places where i felt that a spring would release. and then i press the eject button and miraculously it popped right out. thank god and thank you!!!!!!!
Woo! Thank you all for saving my macbook! I too put a mini cd in there like a plank and it got stuck. when i inserted a thin butter knife i could feel it slide over the top of the cd close to the edge - you could hear the edge ping when you hit it. so i stuck double sided tape to the end of the knife, pressed it on top of the cd and pulled back, and bingo, slipped right out. phew.
you lot are a bunch of geniuses to figure this stuff out
thanks xxx
I was burning a cd in itunes and the CD Stuck when I was trying to eject it, because the burning process was complete.
I was freaking out, none of the other internet tips worked, for 2 days. But I took a butter knife and I was feeling around for that mechanism and finally found it and tilted the knife up and the cd popped out. I never leave comments but this advice worked.
Thank You SOOO MUCH :()
Ok, I tried everything…I mean everything and the sticky card thing worked. My kids had put 2 cd’s in at once. I taped gorilla tape to one side of a gift card and it came out no problem. then the 2nd disk ejected.
I TOO NEVER post to these things…put this thread is helpful and WORKS!
Now off to lecture my kids…
The post-it with the gift (credit) card worked like whoah.
I’m soooo happy!!!
thanks MAc sept 22nd!!!!! the upside down stcky note got my 2.5″ driver cd i stupidly put into my mac book out !!! Bless you!!
works like a CHARM, but be patient it’ll work eventually. I tried the blade, didn’t work, but maybe because it wasn’t wide enough, so i went for the credit card/business card method. I kept restarting my computer and pressed eject while inserting the business card because once my computer loaded, the CD would just freeze and not spin. So just keep at it, it’ll come out eventually!! ooh THANK YOU SO MUCH!! now i don’t have to pay someone to get it out!!! hahaha
OMG THANK YOU TO MAC
with the post-it gift & target card idea!
I put a mini cd in my mac pro thinking that it is a god machine that can handle anything… apparently not quite so…
but non the less i wrapped a long piece of tape sticky side up, and taped it down at the other end on my air miles card (because its soo thin) and slid it onto of the cd, worked like a charm.
THANK YOU
Fantastic ideas!
I used a thin bladed knife to stick some gaffer tape to the top of the disc! Worked first time
Thanks for the tips!
xx
I did the same dumb thing. The flat head did not work. So I tried the combination of a sticky note with a credit card on top to be able to push it down hard enough to stick. It worked!!!!!

This worked for me after a few tries too. My son had jammed 2 DVDs in to the drive at once
thanks for the tip with the + in the middle of the dvd slot. That helped a lot. Got it out with the help of thin scissors. Thanks!!
this trick worked like a charm!!! thank you!!! i used a thin express coupon (in the shape of a business card). you can only put it in the cd drive slot a TEEEEEEny bit so you can feel the click that lifts up the spring and the cd came right out.
thanks!
You are a god damned life saver!!!
I tilted my macbook 45 degrees towards me, used a tweezer to pry open the middle, and the CD came out in no time.
I can’t thank you enough!
thankyou so much to whoever came up with the idea of credit card with tape on it! worked first time and did no damage to my drive! after 8 months i can finally use my dvd/cd drive again! cheers!!
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH.!!!
i had my brothers CD in my school mac book
and i didnt want to get it repaired.!
ive been looking for heaps of solutions but only this one worked.!!
i used my school id card and placed it right at the top of my hard drive and after a few times it came out just enough for me to grab it.!!
thank you so much! =]
Thanks for the help!! Put two side tape on my air miles card, used patience and out popped the two discs.
clear tape on a credit card worked. Thank you to everyone.
I use the sticky note idea and it worked! Oh Thank God. And thank you to you all!
Someone on another site told me to let my mac go into “sleep” mode - when you click to wake it up, the CD will pop out. It didn’t work the first time, but it worked on the second try! So glad I didn’t ruin my computer by operating on it with a butter knife!
Thanks so much. Just put tape on a gift card (making sure I had a grip on the end of the tape) and pulled it right out. Now I can have a glass of wine to celebrate!
I used a couple of playing cards and applied upward pressure which did the trick with the DVD ejecting below the cards. I believe it’s a labeling issue, with the small ridge of a handmade label catching on something inside the slot drive.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. GUYS ONCE I SLIDE HALF WAY IN THE CREDIT CARD WITH DOUBLE SIDED TAPE AND RESTARTED MY MAC, ALL DONE IN 2 SECONDS!!! GENIUS!!!!!!! IF YOU ARE IN LONDON, A DRINK ON ME AND AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH!

OMG, the gift card and tape worked awesome! My kids shoved 2 cds in there and we’ve been trying for a few weeks to get them out because I didn’t want to pay. I finally figured to google it, and tried the gift card with some glue dots and it worked on the second try! Thank you sooo Much!
I just wanted to say that i stuck a tiny programming disk into my macbook thinking that it could handle any disk i put in! obviously i was wrong
anyways i want to say thanks because i stuck some sticky tape to my starbucks card and it got it right out! but i did have to do it a few times!
thank you sooooooo much
I put double sided tape on a thin library card. It came out in like 2.003 seconds!!! Happy Happy Joy Joy!!! SAVE THE MONEY AND DO NOT SEND IT IN FOR A $500 REPAIR JOB!!!
Hi Guys
I was strugglin to remove a mini cd until I looked up this site.
Yes, upside down sticky note did the trick
thanks guys
@Anonymous
This also worked for me. Thanks! Saved me $100 plus labor to get a new drive installed. 9 inches of clear tape, a Costco card and several business cards later I have two kid’s DVDs extracted from a white macbook.
The sticky on the buisness card worked in seconds pn a 2.5″ disk.
Thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I panicked so much last night I tried to unscrew everything on my Macbook Pro to see if I can remove it!
After trying all other tips and no hope, double-sided tape on a credit card worked first time! FAN-frikin-TASTIC!
Hi All,
Please do help me with the problem I got on my Macbook Pro.
I tried installing Windows OS on my mac using Boot camp assistant, while installing I noticed that I lost the installation key so couldn’t progress. On cancelling the installation, my mac doesn’t give me option to boot back to mac. Also, on trying to boot using the SHIFT key doesn’t work, the CD inside tries to isntall the windows which I lost the key.
Please suggest me how can I remove the Windows CD out of my mac.
Thanks.
Thanks for saving me over $100! Tape on a business card worked instantly.
thank you. the holding the spring down worked the first time i tried it. all these other ideas didnt work after trying for almost an hour. thank you soo much, this was ruining my day
I CAN”T BELIEVE THIS WORKED!!!! I live too far from an apple certified tech and thought I was going to have to wait to get this resolved. Much to my amazement, it came out after a whole day of trying and even having another computer tech take a look at it as well. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! My little cousin got a small disk stuck. put double sided tape on my school id and pulled it right out
Hi from Spain.
Just to THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the credit card + tape idea. Two CDs stuck together, the system won’t see them so no reboot or drutil eject technique worked. It took three tries to take them out with some tape.
Muchas gracias
THANK YOU! You seriously just saved my butt
Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saved me a trip to the store.
thx for the info
it really works…..
^^
GREAT!!!!
Tape on a business card worked instantly
@ecstaticate
I used a metro card with a flattened tape loop. Got that mini CD right out! The metro card was good because it is very thin.
Please help! I wish I could be one of all the “thank you so much”-people. But I can’t get this dvd out. I’ve tried everything. Can someone give detailed explanation on how you do it? I don’t want to turn off my macbook. I want to take out the damn dvd without turning it off. Does everybody here who managed to get it out have had your macbooks rebooted before you attempted to get it out? I’ve tried with a knife and with a credit card with double sided tape. What am I doing wrong? Please detail it out for me
I just taped a stick note sticky side up on a credit card. It worked like a champ.
Unfortunately, my wife had tried to disassemble the laptop using a huge screwdriver, and a wood screw. Yeup, she screwed things up. Can’t blame her for trying.
THANK YOU AND LUCKY ME FOR FINDING THIS POST!!
I used a plastic cover, which is slightly thinner than a business card.
It held the spring down and CD was ejected over the plastic.
When I saw the tip of the CD, the drive was pulling it back in. So I just quickly grabbed the tip and forced pulling it out. Hope it doesn’t damage the drive!
brilliant,, no trouble at all. worked first time with double sided tape on a gift card.
Thank you!
