Isreal appears serious about the Gaza pullout. So much so that they are doing what the Palestinians have so far refused to do. They are engaging their own militants with troops and forcing them to comply with leadership.

The peace process between Isreal and Palestine will be a long one. The question has always been, which generation of leadership will stop the cycle of violence and take serious steps to indicate to the other they will not break peace to retaliate against brief or isolated breaches. Which generation of leadership will adopt peace instead of demanding it?

Sharon, the hawk, has the upper hand, and his negotiational position on other issues is strengthened if this current withdrawal is completed without further set-backs.

In order to have any hope of a similar process in the West Bank, Palestinian leadership needs to respond with their own initiative. They need to be seen to be leading the process as well.

The time is ripe.

It is a fascinating exercise in the realm of “scale” to try and wrap one’s head around this story. I mean, I can see the CIA or other agencies needing millions of dollars in cash to work their sources and various collaborators. But we’re talking about 2.4B in cash here. Wow. Double wow. I’m amazed.

One thing these cowboys in Washington know how to do is do things big. I guess that’s why we don’t mess with Texas. Too bad Bush is a blue blood from New Haven, Conneticut, and he bought his Texas ranch in 1999.

Lisa and I just spent a week in Vancouver. We stayed at a friend’s apartment west of Denman right beside Stanley Park. The weather was fantastic, the food great, the sights and shopping beyond reproach. Saw the Rodin show. High tea at Bachus. Brunch at Lift. Pizza at Hell’s Kitchen. Breakfast at Tomato. Sooo much good food. Met with many friends and had fine conversations and many laughs.

Is there a more beautiful city when the sun is shining and it is warm on the patios until midnight? Too bad its like that for only about sixty days a year. We were lucky.

A recent survey of Americans and Japanese citizens discovered 6-in-10 Americans feel World War Three is likely. Big surprise. America is now driven by an ideology of war, and of being “at war.” It is how people are distracted and focussed on issues outside the domestic scene, and how dissent is quashed. Being “at war” is now the standard mode for the USA. With the War on Terror, American leadership now has an open-ended excuse to wield the military is support of whatever foriegn policy agenda they like, and simply lie to the public by telling them its about the War on Terror. As long as a majority of Americans allow themselves to be duped in this manner, or to agree that this is the proper strategy, the rest of the world will continue to push back, and we will indeed remain at war.
