Only in fascist countries, you say?

A schoolkid researching the Bay Bridge in Maryland gets a visit from the FBI. Does this make USians feel safe?

Alternative Energy from Water?

Here’s a new way of generating electricity, developed by Alberta researchers. You can derive an electric charge from water flowing through glass. Read the story here.

Energy Transition

A new energy strategy seems to present a realistic way to transition US dependence on foreign oil, and thereby reduce the impulse of neocons to attack other countries for their oil. Have a look at the Apollo Alliance Website. It’s not the ultimate soilution, of course, but it does seem to be a reasoned approach to transition without unworkable disruption.

Hockey Strike

Anyone have any great ideas about how to avert the coming hockey strike? Seems to me we should just shame them into settling. Fat cats need to remember where their fancy cars and mansions come from. They also need to think about the thousands of low-paying jobs that will disappear if they can’t satisfy their greed before next year’s hockey season starts. Those people look up to the people in the hockey organizations and respect them. They get by on small wages. Will the owners and players really put them all out in the street because they can’t decide how many millions should be enough?

Next best thing to real telekenesis

Scientists working with monkeys have achieved an amazing result that allows the monkeys to control mechanical devices with their thoughts alone. The one gotcha is the monkeys’ thought patterns were studied while using a joystick to perform the same actions. A computer program monitored and quantified the monkeys’ thought patterns as they manipulated the joysticks. The scientists then disconnected the joysticks and the devices kept moving via thoughts alone. Eventually the monkeys stopped moving the joysticks completely and simply moved the devices with their minds. Read about it here
